Food & Liquor: The Samples

Lupe Fiasco: Food & LiquorWith so much anticipation around Lupe Fiasco‘s upcoming album, The Cool, I thought it would be appropriate to celebrate his debut album, Food & Liquor, with a samples spotlight.

Food & Liquor came out on the scene in September 2006. It’s hard to believe that it’s only been a year since it was released. I remember being excited when I first heard it. I thought, for a new artist, Lupe really knew how to bring hip hop back. The production on the album is incredible! Even though Lupe reached out to heavyweights Kanye and Pharrell one a couple of tracks, I really admire how he stuck with mostly lesser-known producers such as his hometown Chicago peeps, Soundtrakk and Prolyfic. To me, Soundtrakk really brought the album together.

The Cool sounds like it’s going to continue where Food & Liquor left off. The first single, “Superstar” (also produced by Soundtrakk), is a killer track. And the recently leaked song, “The Coolest”, show that this new album really has some potential. I’m so excited for December 18th! But for now, break out your copy of Food & Liquor and listen to the following original samples that inspired a great album.
