Introducing… Tone Spliff

New York producer Tone Spliff is making his mark on the underground hip hop community. Inspired by classic hip hop producers such as DJ Premier and Pete Rock, Tone is currently promoting his new compilation Authentic featuring Krumbsnatcha, Copywrite, Murdoc, Apathy, Royce Da 5’9, Special Teamz and more.

We had the opportunity lately to catch up with Tone and see what he’s all about. Hit the jump to see what went down…

Where you reppin:

Upstate/Central New York….Utica to be exact.

Introduce yourself:

What up peoples, my name is Tone Spliff, or just Tone works.

Where did the name Tone Spliff come from?

Well my first name is Anthony, so its a shortened version instead of “Tony”… and also its a simile for “musical tone”….and Spliff, well i’ll leave that one up to the readers.

Main musical inspirations:

DJ Premier, numero uno….hands down. Then of course theres Pete Rock, Marley Marl, Alchemist, Marco Polo, Evidence, Moss, Mr Green….if your making a dope beat, your pretty much inspiring me.

When did you fall in love with hip hop?

Back in the early 90′s, when I was 13….first cassette tape was 2 Live Crew “Banned in the USA” haha…..then I started getting into djing, buying vinyl, my first record was Mobb Deep “Shook Ones” back in like 95.

Current projects we should be looking out for:

I’m currently working on my follow up to Authentic….its going to be hard to follow up, but its sounding amazing so far. Im leaking info on my myspace blog about artists im working with. I just leaked that Craig G will be featured on my new compilation….and heres another leak just for this spotlight: EMILIO ROJAS!!!!! (now im gonna have to make a new blog post when this goes up lol)

Previous work that we should know about:

My compilation Authentic…. all my production and scratches, with tracks and collabs from: Tizz, Krumbsnatcha, Copywrite, King DOM, Murdoc, Baby Blak, Apathy, Royce da 5’9, Special Teamz, Born Talent, King Magnetic, Rise, Irealz, Planet Asia, Shabaam Sahdeeq, Jukstapose, Chaundon, Braille, Wordsworth, Okwerdz, Skyzoo & Pace Won. Peace to all of them btw. Peep the video for Krumbsnatcha “Do It For You” b/w Born Talent “Respect Is Due” directed by Pacool of Chancleta Films.

What’s your equipment setup like?

Real simple, MPC 500 (travel size), 2 Technics, Rane ttm57sl, Macbook Pro (that actually is shitting the bed, i need a newer model)….i do my mastering at J.A. Castle Recording Studios, its truely an amazing studio.

If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?

Gang Starr “Work” off Moment of Truth….just popped in my head, cause im working hard right now.

Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?

Cause I’m just like you. I can tell the heads that come to are real hip hop appreciators. I started checking your site, cause of Premo Wednesdays lol…. so I know your site will have a true following of the type of music I like to create.

What’s next for you?

Continue to connect with artists (if any are reading and want to be involved, contact me)…and just continue to work my normal job, and make some hip hop that real heads can and will appreciate.

Any shout outs or last words?

Shout out to all fans and new fans, Tizz, Rezenebe, Steve at PUMP management, my family and friends, Kevin Nottingham, DJ Eclipse,, all the blogs and websites that posted my album (which is free at anyway) lol….and everyone else I forgot.

  • Mass

How much did he pay to get them on the album?

Same goes with artists who pay another wellknown artist to jump on their track…to make it look like they are a dope artist too cuz they got your fav underground rapper on a track with them…

to me that shit dont settle well…i think good music should speak for it self nd i think building relationships is important…paying them doesnt get respect in the end…

I aint tryin to hate too much cuz its good music…but i kno personally that he paid to get a couple acts on his project…

but in a way its like payrolla with the radio stations…thats why the trash is getting played..

  • dumbmass

of course he paid them Mass….he ain’t premo, alchemist, or pete rock…hes a up n comer….i respect he got these catz.

how u expect the artists to git paid?? these artists gettin doe from mainly from shows, record/digital sales, merch, mixtape hostin, and guest features. if u a producer, holla at them….they might will spit a verse for a price…or might not…..either way, there ain’t many producers puttin out dope compilations….so big up Spliff keep doin ya thing.

  • Mass

“I aint tryin to hate too much cuz its good music” again its not too much about spliff more or less about the artist paying another artist to jump on their shit to make them look good…they paid for that name rather than earned it…
i dunno how did premo and pete rock and alchemist come up? ….they made good music so others saw nad heard that and respected it and the rest is history…they werent paying artists on the way up…they broke bread…something nowaday you motha fukas dont kno about

  • trumass

thats true, but ya gotta start somewhere…its mad tough 4 producers nowadays….i feel where u r comin from tho.

  • dumb ass mass

wtf!? any label no matter how big or small, or producer that is puttin a comp album together is goin to have to pay the artists…emceeing is a fuckin job idiot!..its up to tha artists tho if there even gonna fuck with it…obviously tone spliff is a reputable producer

  • Mass

suck my dick you homo….Read the shit a lil better ” again its not too much about spliff more less about an artist payin another artist to jump on their shit to make them look good” So b4 u get ur panties all up in a bunch….slow ur roll homie…

another quote about spliff…”im not tryin to hate cuz hes making good music” ….atleast betta shit thn u hear on ur radio or mtv for that matter……

i understand hip hop is a money hungry whore now…its ok..but its blinding the youth…..u dont pay for ur connections….u earn that shit…to wrap that up..
