Top 10 Producers: 2011

Justin Ivey: Kno continues to cement his spot as not just one of the best producers at it right now, but of all-time and 2011 just added to his amazing resume. The Atlanta beatsmith unveiled some amazing sounds handling all the production on the latest CunninLynguists album as well as his collaboration with MarQ Spekt. Ski Beatz had a great run himself with his solo album 24 Hour Karate School Pt. 2 in addition to his projects with Cali emcees Locksmith and Murs. Thes One brought out some of his most creative work to date on the new People Under The Stairs LP while Big K.R.I.T. provided bangers to a variety of artists alongside his own releases. With their hand in the bulk of the production on G-Side’s two albums from 2011, the Block Beattaz easily earned a spot in the top 10 as well. Rounding out my list include the Snowgoons, Illastrate, Blue Sky Black Death, No I.D. & Black Milk.

Thomas: The Alchemist provided a diverse group of emcees with tracks this past year: Kool G. Rap, Mobb Deep, Reks, Roc C, Evidence, Raekwon, Curren$y and Roc Marciano. ALC’s tracks were that gritty/gutter type music we love to hear from him. “Water Boarding” by Mobb Deep isprobably the best example of what he had to offer in 2011. Legendary producer Kenny Dope provided Rasheed Chappell with a multitude of break beats and dusty drums to rhyme over. Kenny was able to be nostalgic with the production without it sounding stale (i.e. “Do Your Thing”). Statik Selektah put out at least six projects last year…. all of them being quality products. His best work can be found on Well-Done, R.E.K.S. and Population Control. Just Blaze’s production on GSNT (despite being 4/5 years old) shows the music he creates is timeless. “Lord Knows” might be the song of the year because of JB’s beat. S1, NO I.D., Big K.R.I.T., Kev Brown, ?uestlove (et al.) and Fatin “10” Horton had huge years as well.
