Top 10 Free Albums: 2012

luck-one-dekk-beautiful-music-2-front-600x545This list was actually pretty easy for me to compile this year. Even though there are hundreds of free albums that drop daily, there were only a good handful that stood out to me… and these albums are some that I often play more than retail albums. In fact, if my #1 pick were a retail album, it would have been my #1 Hip Hop album of the year. Beautiful Music Part 2 received SO MUCH play by me this year… an amazing piece of work.

  1. Luck-One & Dekk – Beautiful Music Part 2
  2. Rashid Hadee – Aural Sex: The Search For Pinky Tuscadero
  3. King Mez – My Everlasting Zeal
  4. K. Sparks – Read Between The Lines
  5. Various Artists – The Executive Suite
  6. Doss The Artist – 9 Lives
  7. Harmony Muzik – Conflict of Interest
  8. Christian’Dee – SHVPXRT. / Eff.Plan.B
  9. J NICS & DJ Burn One – Darkside
  10. Raven Sorvino – Playa Del Rey

Sluck-one-dekk-beautiful-music-2-front-600x545ome of the best releases of 2012 were free, but I would have gladly paid for them. The number one spot was truly a toss-up between Luck-One & Dekk’s Beautiful Music Part 2 and Big K.R.I.T’s 4Eva N A Day. I went back and forth between those two before ultimately going with Luck-One & Dekk’s LP. Both projects were incredible and truly deserving of the top spot as K.R.I.T. just as easily could have been slotted #1. One Be Lo showed us a different side on K.I.C.K. P.U.S.H. while still providing the elite lyricism we’ve come to expect. Rising stars such as MaLLy, Nemo Achida, Thee Tom Hardy, J NICS & DaVinci also gave us some high quality projects for free and were worthy of a spot on the best of 2012. Rounding out my top 10 were Bay Area newcomer NATE’s debut and the comeback release by the legendary Showbiz & A.G.

  1. Luck-One & Dekk – Beautiful Music Part 2
  2. Big K.R.I.T. – 4Eva N A Day
  3. One Be Lo – K.I.C.K. P.U.SH.
  4. MaLLy & The Sundance Kid – The Last Great…
  5. Nemo Achida – Conversations With Myself
  6. Thee Tom Hardy – Guerrilla Broadcast
  7. J NICS & DJ Burn One – Darkside
  8. Showbiz & A.G. – Preloaded
  9. NATE – Common Folk
  10. DaVinci – The MOEna Lisa

Honorable Mentions

  • Locksmith – Labyrinth
  • Will – I.L.L.
  • Kyle Hubbard – You’re Not That Special
  • Arrested Development – Standing At The Crossroads
  • David Banner- Sex, Drugs & Video Games

action-bronson-party-supplies-blue-chips-495At this point, the age of free music isn’t going anywhere. These days, the top free albums of the year are often comparable to the best albums of the year. This year was no exception for myself, as my top two free albums were my two top Hip Hop albums of the year (excluding R.A.P. Music and good kid, m.A.A.d city). Action Bronson, Death Grips and The Alchemist all released albums for purchase this year, however it was their “freelease” material that stood out the most for me. The ladies also brought the free heat in 2012 with classics from Angel Haze, Suzi Analogue & Tokimonsta and Mykki Blanco (kind of).

  1. Action Bronson & Party Supplies – Blue Chips
  2. Angel Haze – Reservation
  3. Death Grips – NO LOVE DEEP WEB
  4. Domo Genesis & The Alchemist – No Idols
  5. Analogue Monsta (Suzi Analogue & Tokimonsta) – Boom
  6. A$AP Mob – Lord$ Never Worry
  7. Action Bronson & The Alchemist – Rare Chandeliers
  8. Blu & Exile – Give Me My Flowers While I Can Smell Them
  9. Mykki Blanco – Cosmic Angel: The Illuminati Prince(ss)
  10. Heems – Wild Water Kingdom

Bizarre_TribeI have to admit that most of my personal listening has been filled with free projects, so my list of the Top Free Albums was actually quite the task. After a lot of debate and changing of the list, I went with what I found in my playlist that was of the highest quality in both production and raps. Some of the projects on my list are a little unconventional like my number one pick, Amerigo Gazaway’s Bizarre Tribe: A Quest To The Pharcyde. The album is something that I had couldn’t believe had been done yet as Amerigo recreated a collection of tracks by The Pharcyde using original samples from A Tribe Called Quest production. Bizarre Tribe is definitely an innovative and extremely Certified fresH project that has served me with countless hours of listening enjoyment. The project was also heard by members of The Pharcyde, who have now reached out to Amerigo Gazaway and Gummy Soul to do some exclusive remixes. Check the rest of the list and see what other dope, quality Hip Hop I’ve banged throughout 2012.
