Top 10 EP’s of 2013

Justin Ivey:

I feel like the EP is a perfect way to introduce, or even reintroduce, yourself to the fans as it typically allows artists to avoid the pitfalls of losing their audience’s attention. blackboardPerhaps no one made better use of the EP format in 2013 than Homeboy Sandman, who released two projects that landed in the top ten. Supastition and Binary Star both made their respective comebacks in 2013 using the EP and made you feel like they’d never left. One Be Lo & Senim Silla’s self-titled reunion project Binary Star earned a place in the top five while Supa claimed the top spot with The Blackboard EPMarcel P. Black took on a new sound with the release of his EP Trap Hop and it resulted in his best work to date. And much like Elzhi did with Elmatic, Skyzoo paid tribute to a classic in Reasonable Doubt while adding enough twists to create a record that was more than just an homage.

  1. Supastition – The Blackboard EP
  2. Marcel P. Black – Trap Hop
  3. Homeboy Sandman – Kool Herc: Fertile Crescent
  4. Binary Star – Binary Star EP
  5. Skyzoo – An Ode To Reasonable Doubt
  6. Sean Born & Dunc – Organic
  7. Dillon & H2O – The New Blues Brothers
  8. James Jackson – Work In Progress
  9. D-Risha – Gauntlet EP
  10. Homeboy Sandman – All That I Hold Dear

Honorable Mentions

  • OnlyOne & Furtado Yuen – Volume 2
  • Snoop Dogg & Dam-Funk – 7 Days Of Funk
  • MarQ Spekt – Broken Mazes
  • MC Eiht – Keep It Hood

Michael Stover:

Some great music this year came in the form of projects running somewhere around a half hour in length. batteryWe saw ANTHM rise to the occasion over some production from Blu, the return of Supastition to the mic in the Blackboard EP and more. My number one was a battle between The Battery’s Two and Sean Born & Dunc’s character-driven project Organic. The live instrumentation influenced production and killer rhymes had me putting The Battery’s project at number one. A lot of the EPs we got came in the form of collaboration too including Koncept & Numonics, Dag Savage, Shad K & Skratch Bastid and more.

  1. The Battery – Two
  2. Sean Born & Dunc – Organic
  3. Cas Metah & Mouf Warren – Analog Amazon x Defizit
  4. Dag Savage – Dag Savage EP
  5. Shad & Skratch Bastid – The Spring Up
  6. ANTHM – Handful Of Dust
  7. Supastition – The Blackboard EP
  8. Koncept & Numonics – Live On
  9. Blu, MED & Madlib – Burgundy EP
  10. Action Bronson & Harry Fraud – SAAAB Stories
