What’s good, free world?  We’re two months away from 2013 and the one-year anniversary of the Underground Rundown; your number one source for the news you need to know. Alleged Ex-Cypress Hill Member Loses $250 Million GTA: San Andreas Suit   With all of the buzz surrounding Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d City album, here’s a story that highlights an alleged member of a legendary West coast group and a piece of art that was a tribute to that era of California life.  Michael “Shagg” Washington, a supposed former vocalist for Cypress Hill, claimed to be the inspiration for the character Carl “CJ” Johnson from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The claim later became a lawsuit against Rockstar Video Games Studio, claiming that Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas used his likeness as the inspiration for main character C.J. without his knowledge. “Washington sued Rockstar/ Take Two Video Games for  $250 million, but after several rulings, the California appeals court has found that Washington “failed to establish a probability of defeating Take-Two’s First Amendment-based ‘transformative use’ defense,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “Washington reportedly failed to prove that his face was actually in San Andreas with a judge saying,” ” The plaintiff is relying entirely on C.J.’s physical appearance in the game; but that appearance is so generic that it necessarily includes hundreds of other black males.” Washington claimed he had a meeting in 2003 with game designers to talk about his life on the streets of California and even gave ... Danny!: Payback

payback-medium-2

In 1991, Q-Tip dropped one of the most quoted lines in Hip Hop history on ‘’Check The Rhime’’ with, ‘’Industry rule #4080, record company people are shadyyyyy!” No artist currently active in Hip Hop can attest to the truthfulness of that line like South Carolina emcee Danny! aka Danny Swain.  Landing a deal with Interscope Records in 2011, it seemed as if Danny! would finally get the recognition he deserved. In a strange, twisted bizarre of events, his major label debut Payback (and 7th overall album) never made it to the masses. With the help of The Roots drummer and taste maker Questlove, Danny!  received another chance at glory by signing to Questlove’s OkayPlayer Records.  Now, things seem to be in Danny’s favor. Recently, he’s made his national television debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and has received the ultimate co-sign from Jay-Z. But with all of the hype, frustration and delay shrouding the Payback album, was it worth the wait? Payback sees Danny! return to his  concept album roots, something that made him an internet darling back in 2006 with Charm. The story behind Payback revolves around the theme of revenge. Danny unveils a story narrated by R&B veteran and mentor Joi.  The songstress gives us the story of a young man using drastic measures during desperate times. The album opens with the James Bond –esque ‘’Overture,” which sets a wonderful, mellow tone for the beginning of the album. The horns in the background, combined with the smooth ... Read More »
