8Ball Discusses Life’s Quest, Suave House’s Legacy And The Possibility Of A Big KR.I.T. Produced 8Ball & MJG LP

There’s not much to say about a legend like 8Ball that hasn’t been said before. As one of half of the duo 8Ball & MJG, Premro Smith is one of the pioneers of not only Memphis Hip Hop, but Southern Hip Hop as a whole. With multiple classics under his belt, 8Ball is still going strong and preparing to release his new solo album Life’s Quest on July 17th. I recently had the chance to speak with the M-Town legend to discuss a variety of topics including his upcoming LP, the Premro mixtape, why Suave House Records doesn’t get the same respect as other labels, how working at a burger joint jump started his career, he & G’s time on Bad Boy and the chances of Big K.R.I.T. producing the next 8Ball & MJG LP. Check out my in-depth conversation with 8Ball below. Justin: Hey man, how you doing? 8Ball: What it do? Justin: It’s a real honor to speak with you. 8Ball: Aw man, I appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time. Justin: I wanted to get right into your recent project, which is Premro… of course using your real name. Why did you decide to make that a free release because it was definitely an album quality project? 8Ball: Well, I haven’t had anything out of my own in the marketplace for so long for one. You know what I’m saying, I got that feedback a lot from a lot fans saying I could have made that a real album or whatever, but ... Read More »

Big K.R.I.T: Live From The Underground

Big K.R.I.T’s rise to success has truly been amazing to watch.  Gone are the days of being a little known, yet extremely talented emcee and producer from Mississippi grinding on the mixtape scene. Today, Big K.R.I.T. has found critical acclaim, gained legions of fans, signed with Def Jam and become one of Hip Hop’s new torchbearers. While it’s hard to truly call Live From The Underground his debut, it is the culmination of years of hard work by a man who found success by simply being himself. K.R.I.T. has made his mark with today’s Hip Hop audiences by wearing his influences on his sleeve and having a down-to-earth, every man’s attitude. While many rappers have landed a record deal and tried to conform to a formula, K.R.I.T. sticks to his guns on his major label debut. Even the title of his album, Live From The Underground, is an example of his mindset as an artist entering the machine. K.R.I.T. has been the leader of a country rap tunes renaissance, revitalizing the style that once was the standard for Southern Hip Hop. Just like on his previous free releases, the rhyme prowess and production ability K.R.I.T. displays on Live From The Underground is something to marvel at. The horn-driven “Cool 2 Be Southern” sees K.R.I.T.  boasting his abilities to capture the attention of purists while being unapologetically country as he raps, “Okay I’m straight up off my grandmama porch / Hollywood now, I took the Southernized approach /Collard green pockets but ...
