Top 10 Producers: 2012

Justin: There was plenty of great production work in 2012, but it was an easy choice to me for the best producer of the year. El-P secured the top spot with his amazing work on his solo album Cancer 4 Cure and Killer Mike’s R.A.P. Music. The Block Beattaz were all over the place in 2012, crafting some amazing beats for the Slow Motion Soundz roster as well as artists like Stalley and DaVinci. Jake One landed a major placement in the Rick Ross single “3 Kings” featuring Jay-Z and Dr. Dre while also producing Brother Ali’s latest album in its entirety. Big K.R.I.T. continues to be a fixture on this list as his work on his own projects in addition to crafting beats for the likes of 8Ball, T.I. and Curren$y added to his already impressive discography. The Alchemist, Willie Green and SpaceGhostPurrp each delivered some memorable beats in 2012 with their contributions to a plethora releases by a variety of artists. And while their output may not have been widespread, the production of Dekk, Ryan Lewis and Ka on their respective albums was enough to earn a spot in the top 10 as well. El-P Block Beattaz Jake One Big K.R.I.T. Top 10 Free Albums: 2012

Kevin: This list was actually pretty easy for me to compile this year. Even though there are hundreds of free albums that drop daily, there were only a good handful that stood out to me… and these albums are some that I often play more than retail albums. In fact, if my #1 pick were a retail album, it would have been my #1 Hip Hop album of the year. Beautiful Music Part 2 received SO MUCH play by me this year… an amazing piece of work. Luck-One & Dekk – Beautiful Music Part 2 Rashid Hadee – Aural Sex: The Search For Pinky Tuscadero King Mez – My Everlasting Zeal K. Sparks – Read Between The Lines Various Artists – The Executive Suite Doss The Artist – 9 Lives Harmony Muzik – Conflict of Interest Christian’Dee – SHVPXRT. / Eff.Plan.B J NICS & DJ Burn One – Darkside Raven Sorvino – Playa Del Rey Justin: Some of the best releases of 2012 were free, but I would have gladly paid for them. The number one spot was truly a toss-up between Luck-One & Dekk’s Beautiful Music Part 2 and Big K.R.I.T’s 4Eva N A Day. I went back and forth between those two before ultimately going with Luck-One & Dekk’s LP. Both projects were incredible and truly deserving of the top spot as K.R.I.T. just as easily could have been slotted #1. One Be Lo showed us a different side on K.I.C.K. P.U.S.H. while still providing the elite lyricism we’ve come to expect. Rising stars such as MaLLy, Nemo Achida, Thee Tom Hardy, ... Read More »

Big K.R.I.T.: Rich Dad Poor Dad [Music Video]

Off of Big K.R.I.T.‘s Live From The Underground project comes the powerful video for one of the most personal tracks I’ve heard from K.R.I.T. “Rich Dad Poor Dad” chronicles the emcees life while growing up with an absent at times father. Definitely deep. This is one of the reasons I fuck with Big K.R.I.T., his story telling ability is beyond that of most emcees and takes listeners to the place he wants to take them. Read More »

8Ball Discusses Life’s Quest, Suave House’s Legacy And The Possibility Of A Big KR.I.T. Produced 8Ball & MJG LP

There’s not much to say about a legend like 8Ball that hasn’t been said before. As one of half of the duo 8Ball & MJG, Premro Smith is one of the pioneers of not only Memphis Hip Hop, but Southern Hip Hop as a whole. With multiple classics under his belt, 8Ball is still going strong and preparing to release his new solo album Life’s Quest on July 17th. I recently had the chance to speak with the M-Town legend to discuss a variety of topics including his upcoming LP, the Premro mixtape, why Suave House Records doesn’t get the same respect as other labels, how working at a burger joint jump started his career, he & G’s time on Bad Boy and the chances of Big K.R.I.T. producing the next 8Ball & MJG LP. Check out my in-depth conversation with 8Ball below. Justin: Hey man, how you doing? 8Ball: What it do? Justin: It’s a real honor to speak with you. 8Ball: Aw man, I appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time. Justin: I wanted to get right into your recent project, which is Premro… of course using your real name. Why did you decide to make that a free release because it was definitely an album quality project? 8Ball: Well, I haven’t had anything out of my own in the marketplace for so long for one. You know what I’m saying, I got that feedback a lot from a lot fans saying I could have made that a real album or whatever, but ... Read More »
