Top 10 Smaller/Slept-On Albums: 2012

Kevin: This was absolutely the toughest of the lists to compile this year. As of this writing, I’m still reordering the list and trying to chop it down from 15 to 10. To be fair, I’m taking the two albums I released this year on HiPNOTT out of the top ten and just giving them an honorable mention. On top of that, the category is difficult to define as well. I’m sure there are a lot of albums that I’ve slept on this year, but these are the ones that I feel others may be sleeping on. Small Professor – Gigantic, Vol 1 Lyric Jones – Jones St. Actual Proof – Black Boy Radio Quartermaine – Quarter Life Crisis Marcus D – Melancholy Hopeful Rapsody – The Idea of Beautiful The Red Giants – Supercharged SciFi Stu – Blood ¡MAYDAY! – Take Me To Your Leader Nemo Achida – Goodbye Brooklyn Honorable Mentions: Amiri – Vinyl Ritchie 100dBs & Ryan-O’Neil – Tea & Spliffs Alias & Fakts One – Second Chances Punchline & Soulclap – Underground Superstars Melodious Monk & Tranzformer – Slangin Nouns Justin: Smaller and Slept-On albums to us have always been projects that didn’t get the major publicity others did, although we’d like to think we did our best to help spread the word about them here at KN. My top pick for breakthrough artist of the year also claims the top spot here as 7even:Thirty dropped one of the most creative albums of 2012 in Heaven’s Computer. If you ... Read More »

Top 10 Free Albums: 2012

Kevin: This list was actually pretty easy for me to compile this year. Even though there are hundreds of free albums that drop daily, there were only a good handful that stood out to me… and these albums are some that I often play more than retail albums. In fact, if my #1 pick were a retail album, it would have been my #1 Hip Hop album of the year. Beautiful Music Part 2 received SO MUCH play by me this year… an amazing piece of work. Luck-One & Dekk – Beautiful Music Part 2 Rashid Hadee – Aural Sex: The Search For Pinky Tuscadero King Mez – My Everlasting Zeal K. Sparks – Read Between The Lines Various Artists – The Executive Suite Doss The Artist – 9 Lives Harmony Muzik – Conflict of Interest Christian’Dee – SHVPXRT. / Eff.Plan.B J NICS & DJ Burn One – Darkside Raven Sorvino – Playa Del Rey Justin: Some of the best releases of 2012 were free, but I would have gladly paid for them. The number one spot was truly a toss-up between Luck-One & Dekk’s Beautiful Music Part 2 and Big K.R.I.T’s 4Eva N A Day. I went back and forth between those two before ultimately going with Luck-One & Dekk’s LP. Both projects were incredible and truly deserving of the top spot as K.R.I.T. just as easily could have been slotted #1. One Be Lo showed us a different side on K.I.C.K. P.U.S.H. while still providing the elite lyricism we’ve come to expect. Rising stars such as MaLLy, Nemo Achida, Thee Tom Hardy, ... Read More »

Top 10 Comeback Artists: 2012

There’s a lot of different ways to classify a comeback, and we saw a variety of them in 2012. Securing the #1 spot for comeback artist of the year was Showbiz & A.G. of the legendary Diggin’ In The Crates crew. Show & A reunited for the duo’s first official project in five years as well as their first full-length album in over 14 years. The tandem delivered a successful comeback album called Mugshot Music along with an equally superb prequel titled Preloaded. Lupe Fiasco bounced back after releasing one of the worst albums of 2011 — Lasers — by dropping Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Part 1, a well-received sequel to his critically acclaimed debut. Years of label turmoil stifled Styles Of Beyond’s career, but the group was finally able to share their third LP, Reseda Beach, with the world in 2012. Lord Infamous had a life-thereatening scare two years ago, suffering a heart attack and stroke, but the former Three 6 Mafia member made a strong return from that adversity this year with two new albums and an EP. Bay Area veteran Mac Mall released quite possibly his best work in over a decade in 2012 while Masta Killa of the Wu-Tang Clan and former Outsidaz emcee Young Zee reappeared on the scene with their own respectively dope LPs. Check out the rest of our selection below and let us know who you felt made a comeback in 2012. Read More »
