That moment, when you’re standing facing yourself in the mirror, interesting thoughts slowly draw themselves to the core of your conscious. At times, those thoughts can be negative: “What have I become?” “Look at yourself…” “[Point out many a ‘flaw’]” But these thoughts offer the thinker a sort of easily accessible bit of constructive criticism that will either build or destroy. Regardless, it can be argued that this periodic disposition is necessary for rational minds to be just that. These thoughts may seep outside of that reflection and pepper themselves throughout our daily lives. Stereotypes, judgments and other “peanut-gallery” comments that we keep within, but admittedly make almost by instinct. Many people think nothing of these thoughts, while others may turn them over and over in their head to try and make sense of their own minds. In this light, it’s alluring to flip the thoughts backwards and face them on the outside, rather than the inside. It is in this way that …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin, The Legendary Roots Crew’s latest opus, finds its center of gravity in modern music. Never ones to skimp on intriguing quality, The Roots take a rather dark concept and take different stabs at it through a pithy, half-hour long record.
